What is a charter school?

A charter school is an open-enrollment, tuition-free public school that is open to ALL grade-appropriate students in a designated geographic area, on a space available basis.  It is an independently managed public school governed by a Board of Trustees. In exchange for flexibility in operation, a charter school is held to a high standard of accountability for performance. There is no cost to attend a charter school.

What makes Great Oaks Legacy unique?

Great Oaks Legacy is a high performing, college prep charter school serving students in Pre-K – 12th grade on four campuses across the city of Newark. Our school program features a rigorous academic curriculum, more time on task via an extended school day, and an individualized approach to student learning, which includes a co-teacher model in lower elementary grades, and daily tutoring for grades 3 to 10. Students have access to robust extracurricular offerings, sports, and technology, including a 1:1 Chromebook ratio for middle and high school students. Our students also receive character education, leadership classes, and access to a strong student support team. Each student is a known and valued member of a strong community working to prepare them for college success!

Can any student attend Great Oaks Legacy Charter School?

Great Oaks Legacy is open to all students! There are no admissions requirements. Great Oaks Legacy is a public charter school, open to all students, including students with special education needs.

How do I enroll my child at Great Oaks Legacy?

Does Great Oaks Legacy serve non-Newark students?

Yes! Although preference is given to Newark students, we serve students from surrounding districts. Parents should still apply via the Newark Enrolls application (see above). Non-Newark students will be placed on our waitlist. Note: Our Pre-K program is only available to Newark residents.

What is the daily schedule?

Our school community provides an extended day schedule. Students arrive between 7:45 and 8:15 am and are greeted warmly every day by our school leadership team members. The school day includes a strong academic program, tutorial for students in 3rd through 12th grades, and robust extracurricular activity programming. Students are typically dismissed at 4:00 pm. After school programming is available for elementary students. Sports and after school enrichments are available to middle and high school students. We provide additional academic intervention to students identified as need additional support, after school or on Saturdays, based on campus. Most campuses have an early dismissal on Fridays.

Do you provide transportation?

Transportation is currently provided at our Legacy Campuses based on availability. Newark students at our downtown campuses may qualify for bus tickets based on their proximity to the school. Please inquire about transportation with our enrollment team.

Do students wear uniform?

Yes. Student uniform information is available during parent registration and orientation.
